Vilma Jää
Vilma Jää is an ethno-pop artist who draws her strength from intense emotions and dark themes. Jää's music blends folk music and pop, where acoustic traditional instruments merge with synthetically produced beats, and the Finnish-Ugric singing tradition flirts with pop aesthetics. Her feminist and socially aware music addresses contemporary issues through history, revealing how tragically little the world has changed, especially in matters concerning women.
Vilma Jää gained international recognition when Kaija Saariaho composed the role of a folk singer for her in the opera Innocence. Her debut single Saatanan saalistaja, released in 2021, made Jää one of the most intriguing new artists in Finland, and the 2023 release of her album Kosto solidified her position at the top of Finnish music, winning the Vuoden Etno award at the Emma Gala and the Vuoden Kansanmusiikkilevy award at the Eläköön FOLK! gala.
