The River

Vapaa Teatteri, Teatteri Jurkka, Lahden kaupunginteatteri & Tampereen Työväen Teatteri

Based on the novel by Rosa Liksom
Directed, dramatized and set design by Mikko Roiha

The Lapland War is breaking out. A girl is leading a herd of cows to safety in Sweden.

Chaos and abandonment run wild among the refugees. All living things become equal along the way – nations, people, animals. The journey also promises a shortcut to adulthood, to a new identity, to somewhere different. A vibrant dialect flourishes, covering everything from black to white. Underneath, there’s the search for a missing mother.

Based on Rosa Liksom’s Finlandia-nominated novel, this startling monologue piece is performed by Ella Mettänen, one of the leading talents of her generation and a recent recipient of an Olavi Veistäjä award.

Dramatized and directed by Mikko Roiha, The River is the follow-up to Roiha's adaptation of Tommi Kinnunen's Defiance in a series of works focusing on women's wartime experiences.

”Ella Mettänen carries the story with the full intensity of her craft.”
