The Day of Remembrance

Suomen Kansallisteatteri

Written by Elli Salo

Directed by Riikka Oksanen

December 1931, just before the Gulf of Finland freezes over. A group of Finns on a smuggler’s boat from Tervasaari island to the Soviet Union – the Eastern Wonderland, a society ruled by the working class, a shining promise of a better future for everyone.

The Day of Remembrance, written by Finlandia-nominee Elli Salo, is a devastating play about extreme fates. It tells the story of the Finns who disappeared during Stalin’s purges, and their dreams at the mercy of the storm of history.

Featuring a stellar ensemble of actors and musicians, The Day of Remembrance shows both the horror and beauty of human acts. It is based on real-life documents – letters, diaries, and interrogation records – that courageously bring us face to face with decades of inhibited grief.

This is the story of people who deserve to be remembered.

The Day of Remembrance accomplishes its aim in a dignified way.”
