Haavemaa – A Savonian Mayhem

Vauriomania

Written by Jonnakaisa Risto, Paavo Kääriäinen and Juuso Timonen
Directed by Juuso Timonen

A banger of a show that blows open the doors of a Savonian bar.

A seemingly quiet winter night in Mäyrävesi, Savonia, and the town’s watering hole, Haavemaa. Jouko has no money but is nevertheless obsessed with the slot machine. Miku is a business college student who dreams of a better life in ”Los Ankeles”. Childminder Helvi is singing karaoke and feeling like it’s spring even when there’s a blizzard outside. Desperate for cash, someone offers to take a group of American tourists on a polar bear safari.

Does anyone notice six-year-old Maisa, or the message of her drawings, in the corner of the bar?

This is Haavemaa by Vauriomania, a theatre outfit known for their cross-pollinations of grisly comedy and dark matter. The extraordinary talents Paavo Kääriäinen and Jonnakaisa Risto share the stage with fascinatingly grotesque puppets.

Haavemaa is dirty and delicate, raunchy and rough-loving theatre.”
