A Camp on the Edge of the World
Rovaniemen Teatteri
Seppo Saraspää - Lauri Sipari; Directed by Taava Hakala
The Rovaniemi Theatre’s A Camp on the Edge of the World was awarded the Performance of the Year title in the Thalia Gala in February. Moreover, the costume and set designers were awarded for the play’s visual presentation. “The performance’s abundantly meandering elements become an organic part of the acting work.” (Lauri Meri, HS)
Kaamassaari Island in Lappland houses the war prisoner camp Andreasnuora. The German guards - rejects of the war themselves - keep discipline among the Russian prisoners of war working as lumbermen. A Finnish interpreter, with both Russian and German lineage in his family, is sent to the camp. The ethnic motley crew is further mixed up by a native Skolt Sámi, who convinces the Germans to give him work at the camp to save him from starvation.
The Rovaniemi Theatre working group grasps the absurdity of the play and turns it into brazen, unapologetic theatre about war and what it makes people be and do.
