Juhani Aho – Mikko Roiha; Directed by Mikko Roiha; Choreography by Mikko Roiha and Working Group
Juhani Aho’s story about Juha, whose wife Marja elopes with a slick Russian salesman, contains already in itself the ingredients of the archetypal Finnishness. In Mikko Roiha’s hands it gains depth and volume.Dance Theatre Minimi’s performance is constructed on lucid and sparsely worded esthetics where the national romantic passion is given its rightful place. Yet, at the same time, the eras get blended together and the portrayal of the relationship between Finland and Russia stretches out till today – both Sibelius and Georg Ots are heard in the background; there’s the pathos of Finlandia, the popular lightness of One Million Roses.
Though there is plenty of room for humour, the fundamental human tragedy is depicted as timeless and true. “The rapid roars, the wildfowl cries. Many in the audience will tear up, as well.” (Suna Vuori, HS)
