Swedish Cullberg Ballet to Perform at Tampere Theatre Festival in August

27.3.2017

Sweden’s internationally best-known contemporary dance company, the Cullberg Ballet, will be part of this year’s lineup at the Tampere Theatre Festival. The renowned company will be performing Protagonist, a large-scale production celebrating the Cullberg Ballet’s 50th anniversary.

Choreographed for 14 dancers and directed by Jefta van Dinther, one of Europe’s top talents, Protagonist examines human nature and the importance of belongingness, as the characters seek their place in the community while taking on the leading role in their own lives.

Protagonist is narrated by recent Swedish pop sensation Elias, whose breakthrough hit, ”Revolution”, serves as a theme song for the piece.

As described by Erik Söderblom, member of the festival’s artistic board of directors, Protagonist is ”a groundbreaking event, set between physical theatre and dance, mirroring our times in a unique way.”

The world premiere of Protagonist took place in Amsterdam in July 2016. In November, it premiered in Sweden at Stockholm’s Dansens Hus. Protagonist is part of the Cullberg Ballet’s anniversary programme, and it is the second piece Jefta van Dinther has directed for the company. The first, Plateau Effect (2013), was the recipient of the Dance Award by the Swedish Section of the International Association of Theatre Critics.

Produced in cooperation with the Tampere Hall, Protagonist will be performed at the Tampere Hall’s Main Auditorium on Sunday, August 13. Tickets are available beginning Monday, March 27, World Theatre Day, at Lippupiste and the Tampere Hall ticket office.

Schedules for the Tampere Theatre Festival’s Main Programme and the Programme Tent will be announced on May 4 at 1 p.m. The festival takes place from August 7 to 13, 2017.
