The Belarus Free Theatre (Belarus & UK)
Written and directed by Nicolai Khalezin
What if you became an enemy of the state because of your art? What would you do if the government took away your basic human rights? How do you survive in one of the most brutal prison systems in the world?
The Belarus Free Theatre will provide detailed answers to these questions. The theatre’s founders are working in exile in the UK, and its members underground in Belarus, all due to political repression.
Fueled by the artists’ personal experiences, the lusciously theatrical and physically exhausting Burning Doors takes a strong stand against the deprivation of the right to self-expression.
The production is based on the firsthand accounts of, among others, Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, Pussy Riot member and activist Maria Alyokhina, and performance artist Pyotr Pavlensky.
